[영어 공부] 음식 잡지 기사로 영어 공부 2

본 포스트는 음식잡지에 나온 영어 표현과 단어를 정리하는 프로젝트의 일환입니다. 글마다 표현 방식과 사용하는 단어가 다르기 때문에 가능한 다양한 글에서 나온 표현을 정리하려는 목적에서 이 프로젝트를 진행하고 있습니다.

Pastry chef Paola Velez started the year at Kith + Kin, making her signature plantain sticky buns and thick chocolate chip cookies.  
파티시에 Paola Velez는 올해를 Kith + Kin에서 그녀의 시그니처인 플랜틴 시나몬 롤과 두꺼운 초콜릿 칩 쿠키를 만들며 시작했다.

• Pastry chef: 파티시에
• plantain sticky buns: plantain은 플랜틴(바나나 같이 생긴 과일), sticky buns은 시나몬 롤(a spiral-shaped cinnamon roll topped with melted brown sugar and butter)을 의미합니다.
• like no other: 다른 것과 견줄 수 없는, very special
• property: 건물, 땅, a building or a area of land, or both together

 

When the pandemic prompted a shut-down and the staff was furloughed, she started a new gig, but not before founding Bakers Against Racism with Willa Pelini and Rob Rubba, which has so far raised over $2 million for social justice causes.  
전염병으로 업무 정지되고 직원들이 일시적으로 해고당했을 때, 그녀는 사회 정의를 위해 지금까지 2백만 달러 이장을 모금한 Bakers Against Racism을 Willa Pelini 그리고 Rob Rubba와 함께 창립한 후에 새로운 일을 시작했다.

• but not before: A, but not before B = B happens, then A (B가 먼저 발생하고 A가 발생함)이고 A before B는 A happens, then B (A가 먼저 발생하고 B가 발생함) 입니다.

 

Now, Velez is at the helm of La Bodega, a bakery inside Rose Previte's Compass Rose. She draws from her background and childhood growing up in the Dominican Republic and New York City, making a new breed of baked goods she calls New Americana. 
현재 Velez는 Rose Previte의 Compass Rose 안에 있는 빵집인 La Bodega를 경영하고 있다. 그녀는 도미니카공화국과 뉴욕시에서 자란 어린 시절과 배경에서 끌어내 자신이 New Americana라고 부르는 새로운 제과, 제빵을 만들어내고 있다.

• at the helm of: = in control of
• Rose Previte: Compass Rose의 소유주
• draw something from something: 어떤 곳에서 무언가를 끌어내다, 얻다(to get something from a particular place)
• breed: 동식물의 종
• baked goods: 구운 제품, 제과 제빵이라고 번역하였습니다.
• at the helm of: = in control of

 

“It's the American story retold by first-generation and second-generation Americans,” she says. “We're finding a place where all of this makes sense.”  
"그건 처음과 두 번째 세대의 미국인들이 다시 말하는 미국 이야기입니다. 우리는 이 모든 것이 말이 되는 장소를 찾고 있습니다." 그녀는 말한다.

• make sense: 말이 되다(to be clear and easy to understand)

 

That place has babka—a nod to Velez’s Jewish neighborhood in the Bronx, but it's made with guava and cheese or dulce de leche. There's also rum cakes, ube donuts, and egg tarts. 
그곳에는 바브카가 있다 - Bronx에 있는 Velez의 유대인 동네의 영향이 있겠지만, 구아바와 치즈 또는 둘세 데 레체로 만든다. 럼 케이크와 우베 도넛, 그리고 에그 타르트도 있다.

• babka: 건포도, 오렌지 껍질, 럼주, 아몬드 등이 든 케이크를 일컫는 말
• a nod to ~: 누군가가 무언가의 중요성이나 영향력을 알고 있거나 알길 원한다는 표시(a sign that someone is aware of or wants to recognize the influence or importance of something). nod는 고개를 끄덕이다 라는 뜻이 있는데 a nod to ~라고 하면 ~에 고개가 끄덕여질 정도로 인정하는 것을 의미하는 것 같습니다.
• be made with ~: ~로 만들어져 있다. 참고로 비슷한 의미를 가진 표현의 차이를 정리해 놓겠습니다. be made of something (something을 눈으로 봐서 원형을 인식할 수 있을 때), be made from something (something을 눈으로 봐서 원형을 인식할 수 없을 때), be made with something (음식 재료 이야기할 때 주로 사용), 단, 하나의 재료로 된 것은 made from을 씁니다. 쉽게 말해 중요한 재료가 여럿이면 made with 하나면 made from을 쓴다고 생각하면 될 것 같네요. 그리고 made with는 with 뒤에 명시한 것 이외에 다른 재료가 있을 수 있습니다.
• dulce de leche: 둘세 데 레체(Dulce de Leche)는 스페인어로 달콤한 우유라는 뜻입니다.
• ube: 필리핀어로 보라색 고구마라고 합니다.
• egg tart: 에그 타르트

 

Beverage director Jess Weinstein is making cocktails that complement Velez’s baked goods and tell her own story. “Those stories melt together, because that is what America is,” says Velez. 
베버리지 디렉터 Jess Weinstein이 Velez의 제과, 제빵 제품에 어울리며 그녀 자신의 이야기를 들려주는 칵테일을 만들고 있다. "그 이야기들은 함께 녹아듭니다, 왜냐하면 그것이 바로 미국이기 때문이죠"라고 Velez는 말한다.

• complement: 보완하다, 잘 어울린다고 해석하였습니다.
• melt: 녹다
