Chapter 15

 

Mrs. Phillips was always glad to see her nieces; and the two eldest, from their recent absence, were particularly welcome, and she was eagerly expressing her surprise at their sudden return home, which, as their own carriage had not fetched them, she should have known nothing about, if she had not happened to see Mr. Jones’s shop-boy in the street, who had told her that they were not to send any more draughts to Netherfield because the Miss Bennets were come away, when her civility was claimed towards Mr. Collins by Jane’s introduction of him.
Phillips 부인은 항상 조카들을 보는 것을 기뻐했다. 첫째와 둘째는 최근에 집에 없었기 때문에 특히 더 환영받았다. Phillips 부인은 그녀들이 갑자기 집에 돌아와서 놀랐다며 호들갑을 떨었다. 집 마차가 그녀들을 데리러 가지 않아서 모를 뻔했는데 Jones 씨의 가게 점원 아이와 길에서 우연히 만나서 Bennet가의 딸들이 Netherfield를 떠나서 더 이상 약을 보내지 않는다고 들었다는 것이었다. 그리고 Jane이 Collins 씨를 소개하여 부인은 그에게 예의를 차리며 대화를 했다.

• fetch: 데리고 오다
• shop-boy: 가게 점원 아이
• draught: 약
• come away: (장소에서) 떠나다
• civility: 정중한 말

 

She received him with her very best politeness, which he returned with as much more, apologising for his intrusion, without any previous acquaintance with her, which he could not help flattering himself, however, might be justified by his relationship to the young ladies who introduced him to her notice.
그녀는 최대한 예의 바르게 Collins 씨를 맞이했고 그는 더 예의를 차리며 화답했다. 일전에 뵌 적도 없는데 찾아와서 죄송하지만 자신을 부인에게 소개해준 아가씨들이 자기의 친척인 것으로 무례를 용서받을 수 있어서 자랑스럽다는 것이었다.

• intrusion: 침입, 침범
• can not help flattering oneself that ~: ~해서 자신이 자랑스럽다, ~해서 자신을 칭찬하지 않을 수 없다.
• be justified by ~: ~에 의해서 정당화되다. 여기에서는 모르는 사이에 갑자기 침범(intrusion) 한 것이 아가씨들과 친척인 것으로 정당화된다는 뜻입니다. 무례를 용서하다 라고 이해하는 것이 맞는 것 같습니다.

 

Mrs. Phillips was quite awed by such an excess of good breeding; but her contemplation of one stranger was soon put to an end by exclamations and inquiries about the other; of whom, however, she could only tell her nieces what they already knew, that Mr. Denny had brought him from London, and that he was to have a lieutenant’s commission in the ——shire.
Phillips 부인은 그런 과도한 예절에 상당히 압도되었지만, 낯선 이에 대한 부인의 생각은 다른 낯선 이에 대한 감탄과 질문에 의해서 끝이 났다. 하지만 부인이 조카들에게 말해줄 수 있는 것은 Denny 씨가 런던에서 데리고 왔다는 것과 -주에서 중위로 임관할 것이라는 조카들이 이미 알고 있는 것뿐이었다.

• awed by ~: ~에 의해서 압도되다, 위압되다
• good breeding: (좋은 집안의 가정교육으로 인한) 예의범절
• contemplation: 긴 생각, 길게 쳐다봄
• be put to an end: 끝나다, 종료되다
• lieutenant: 중위
• shire: 주(행정구역)

 

She had been watching him the last hour, she said, as he walked up and down the street, and had Mr. Wickham appeared, Kitty and Lydia would certainly have continued the occupation, but unluckily no one passed windows now except a few of the officers, who, in comparison with the stranger, were become “stupid, disagreeable fellows.”
Phillips 부인은 Wickham 씨가 거리를 오르락내리락할 때 한 시간 동안 그를 쳐다보고 있었고, 그가 나타나면 Kitty와 Lydia도 분명히 계속 쳐다보게 될 것이라고 했다. 하지만 지금은 몇몇의 장교들을 제외하고 아무도 창문가를 지나가지 않았다. 그리고 그들은 그와 비교하면 “멍청하고 성질 나쁜 남자들”이 되어있었다.

• continue the occupation: Phillps 부인이 1시간 동안 쳐다본 것과 똑같이 그 일을 계속한다는 뜻입니다.
• in comparison with ~: ~와 비교해서
