Chapter 15 (마지막)

 

Some of them were to dine with the Phillipses the next day, and their aunt promised to make her husband call on Mr. Wickham, and give him an invitation also, if the family from Longbourn would come in the evening.
그들 중 몇몇이 다음날 Phillips 부부와 저녁 식사를 할 예정이었는데, Longbourn 식구들이 그날 저녁에 오겠다고 하면 남편을 보내서 Wickham 씨도 초대하게 하겠다고 Phillips 부인이 약속했다.

• dine with ~: ~와 저녁식사를 하다, 만찬을 하다
• call on ~: ~를 찾아가다, 방문하다.

 

This was agreed to, and Mrs. Phillips protested that they would have a nice comfortable noisy game of lottery tickets, and a little bit of hot supper afterwards. The prospect of such delights was very cheering, and they parted in mutual good spirits.
조카들은 부인의 약속을 받아들였고, 부인은 재미있고 편하고 떠들썩한 복권 게임을 하고 나서 따뜻한 저녁을 먹자고 했다. 그렇게 즐겁게 시간을 보낼 생각을 하는 것은 아주 신이 나는 일이었고, 그들은 서로 기분 좋게 작별 인사를 했다.

• agree to ~: ~(제안이나 계획)을 받아들이다
• protest ~: ~를 강하게 말하다
• game of lottery tickets: 카드게임의 일종이라고 합니다.
• prospect: 예상, 전망, 미래에 어떤 일이 벌어질 가능성.
• part: 헤어지다
• mutual: 상호 간의, 서로의

 

Mr. Collins repeated his apologies in quitting the room, and was assured with unwearying civility that they were perfectly needless.
방을 나가면서 Collins 씨는 계속 사과했고, Phillips 부인도 지칠 줄 모르는 정중한 태도로 사과할 필요가 전혀 없다고 말했다.

• quit: 어떤 장소를 떠나다
• unwearying: 지치지 않는, 끊임없는
• assure that ~: ~라고 보장하다, 장담하다.
• needless: 불필요한. they가 가리키는 건 사과(apologies)입니다. 즉, 사과할 필요가 전혀 없다고 들었다는 의미인데, 맥락상 Phillips 부인이 그렇게 말했다고(assure) 볼 수 있습니다.

 

As they walked home, Elizabeth related to Jane what she had seen pass between the two gentlemen; but though Jane would have defended either or both, had they appeared to be in the wrong, she could no more explain such behaviour than her sister.
집으로 걸어가면서 Elizabeth는 Jane에게 그 두 신사 사이에 흐르는 이상한 느낌에 대해서 자신이 본 것을 말해주었다. 두 사람이 잘못한 것처럼 보인다면 그 들 중 한쪽 혹은 양쪽 모두라도 Jane이 변호했겠지만, 자신도 동생만큼 두 남자의 그런 행동을 이해할 수 없었다.

• relate: 말하다, 이야기하다
• defend: 변호하다
• explain: 설명하다
• behaviour: 행동

 

Mr. Collins on his return highly gratified Mrs. Bennet by admiring Mrs. Phillips’s manners and politeness.
집으로 돌아오자 Collins 씨는 Phillips 부인의 예의범절을 칭찬하여 Bennet 부인을 아주 기쁘게 했다.

• on one’s return: 돌아오자, 돌아왔을 때
• gratify: 기뻐하게하다, 만족시키다.

 

He protested that, except Lady Catherine and her daughter, he had never seen a more elegant woman; for she had not only received him with the utmost civility, but even pointedly included him in her invitation for the next evening, although utterly unknown to her before.
그는 Catherine 부인과 Bennet 부인의 딸을 제외하고 그런 품격 있는 여성을 본 적이 없다고 했다. 자신을 최고로 정중한 태도로 맞아주었을 뿐 아니라, 생전 처음 보는 자기까지 꼭 집어서 다음날 저녁 식사에 초대해 주었다는 것이었다.

• elegant: 우아한, 품격 있는
• utmost: 최고의, 극도의
• pointedly: 꼭 집어서
• utterly: 완전히

 

Something, he supposed, might be attributed to his connection with them, but yet he had never met with so much attention in the whole course of his life.
일부는 자기가 Bennet 가와 친척 관계인 것 덕분이리라 짐작은 하지만, 일평생 그런 배려는 받아본 적이 없다고 하였다.

• suppose: 짐작하다, 추측하다
• be attributed to ~: ~에 기인하다, ~의 덕분이다.
• attention: 배려
• in the whole course of one’s life: 일평생, 지금까지 살면서
