Chapter 16

 

As no objection was made to the young people’s engagement with their aunt, and all Mr. Collins’s scruples of leaving Mr. and Mrs. Bennet for a single evening during his visit were most steadily resisted, the coach conveyed him and his five cousins at a suitable hour to Meryton; and the girls had the pleasure of hearing, as they entered the drawing-room, that Mr. Wickham had accepted their uncle’s invitation, and was then in the house.
딸들이 이모와 한 약속에 반대는 없었고, 자신의 방문 중에 하룻밤이라도 Bennet 부부만 남겨두고 나가는 것을 내켜하지 않는 Collins 씨에게 괜찮으니 사양 말고 다녀오라고 했기 때문에 그와 다섯 조카들은 적당한 시간에 Meryton으로 향했다. 그들이 응접실로 들어서자 아가씨들은 Wickham 씨가 이모부의 초대에 응해 와 있다는 기쁜 소식을 들었다.

• engagement: 약속
• scruple: 가책, 거리낌, 주저함
• steadily: 꾸준히, 한결같이
• resist: 저항하다, 반대하다. Collins 씨가 주저하는 것이 반대를 받았다는 것은 Bennet 부인이 Collins 씨에게 괜찮으니 가도 좋다고 말한 것으로 이해할 수 있습니다.
• convey: 나르다, 운반하다.
• suitable: 적당한
• hear: 듣다

 

When this information was given, and they had all taken their seats, Mr. Collins was at leisure to look around him and admire, and he was so much struck with the size and furniture of the apartment, that he declared he might almost have supposed himself in the small summer breakfast parlour at Rosings;
그 소식을 듣고 모두 자리에 앉았을 때, Collins 씨는 주위를 둘러보고 칭찬을 늘어놓을 틈이 났다. 그는 응접실의 크기와 가구에 깊은 감명을 받아서 Rosings의 작은 여름용 응접실에 있는 것 같다고 말했다.

• be at leisure: 틈이 있다, 짬이 있다
• look around: 주위를 둘러보다
• apartment: 방. 앞에서 응접실에 들어왔다고 했기 때문에 여기에서는 응접실이라고 이해할 수 있습니다.
• suppose himself in ~: 자기 자신이 ~에 있다고 생각하다.

 

a comparison that did not at first convey much gratification; but when Mrs. Phillips understood from him what Rosings was, and who was its proprietor—when she had listened to the description of only one of Lady Catherine’s drawing-rooms, and found that the chimney-piece alone had cost eight hundred pounds, she felt all the force of the compliment, and would hardly have resented a comparison with the housekeeper’s room.
처음에는 그런 비교에 Phillips 부인은 썩 기분이 좋지 않았다. 하지만 Rosings가 무엇이며, 주인이 누구인지 그에게서 들었을 때 - Catherine 부인의 응접실 중 하나에 대한 설명을 듣고 벽난로 선반 하나가 800 파운드라는 것을 알았을 때, 그녀는 Collins 씨의 칭찬이 대단한 찬사라는 것을 깨달았고 하녀장의 방과 비교했더라도 화를 내지 않았을 것이었다.

• gratification: 만족감, 기쁘게 하는 것
• chimney-piece: 벽난로 선반
• felt the force of ~: ~의 힘을 느끼다, ~의 효력을 느끼다. 여기에서는 Collins 씨가 한 말이 엄청난 칭찬이라는 것을 느꼈다는 의미로 이해하는 것이 맞는 것 같습니다.
• resent ~: ~에 화를 내다
• housekeeper: 하녀들의 우두머리, 하녀장

 

In describing to her all the grandeur of Lady Catherine and her mansion, with occasional digressions in praise of his own humble abode, and the improvements it was receiving, he was happily employed until the gentlemen joined them;
Collins 씨는 남자들이 와서 합석할 때까지 Catherine 부인과 부인의 저택의 대단함에 대해서 Phillips 부인에게 설명하면서, 그리고 가끔 자신의 누추한 집과 개조한 부분들을 칭찬하는 것으로 이야기가 탈선하기도 하면서 즐겁게 시간을 보냈다.

• grandeur: 웅장함, 대단함
• digression: 탈선, 본론에서 벗어남
• improvements: 개조, 개량. 바로 뒤에 나오는 it은 Collins 씨의 집(his own humble abode)이며 그 집이 개조를 받고 있다는 맥락입니다.
• be employed in doing ~: ~하는데 시간을 쓰다. 맨 앞의 in describing가 뒤에 나오는 employed와 연결되는 구조입니다.

 

and he found in Mrs. Phillips a very attentive listener, whose opinion of his consequence increased with what she heard, and who was resolving to retail it all among her neighbours as soon as she could.
그는 Phillips 부인이 아주 열심히 들어준다고 느꼈다. 그리고 Phillips 부인의 그의 중요성에 대한 평가는 들을수록 올라갔고 가능한 한 빨리 이웃들에게 자신이 들은 것을 전부 퍼뜨려야겠다고 결심하고 있었다.

• attentive: 주의를 기울이는, 주의 깊게 들어주는
• resolve to ~: ~하기로 결심하다
• retail: (말을) 퍼뜨리다
