Chapter 15

 

On distinguishing the ladies of the group, the two gentlemen came directly towards them, and began the usual civilities. Bingley was the principal spokesman, and Miss Bennet the principal object. He was then, he said, on his way to Longbourn on purpose to inquire after her.
일행들에서 아가씨들을 알아보자 두 신사는 그들을 향해서 곧장 걸어와서 평소대로 정중한 대화를 시작했다. 말하는 사람은 주로 Bingley 였고 그 대상은 주로 Bennet 양이었다. 그는 그녀의 안부가 궁금해 Longbourn으로 가는 길이었다고 했다.

• distinguish: 알아보다
• on one’s way to ~: ~로 가는 길
• inquire after ~: ~의 안부를 묻다

 

Mr. Darcy corroborated it with a bow, and was beginning to determine not to fix his eyes on Elizabeth, when they were suddenly arrested by the sight of the stranger, and Elizabeth happening to see the countenance of both as they looked at each other, was all astonishment at the effect of the meeting.
Darcy 씨는 맞다는 뜻으로 고개를 끄덕였고 Elizabeth에게서 눈을 떼기로 결심했을 때 갑자기 낯선 이가 시야에 들어왔다. Elizabeth는 우연히 서로를 쳐다볼 때의 두 사람의 얼굴을 보았고 깜짝 놀랐다.

• corroborate: 확인해주다(confirm), 확실하게 하다.
• arrest: 시선이나 관심을 끌다. 주어인 they가 가리키는 건 eyes 입니다.
• sight: 눈에 보이는 모습, 광경
• happen to ~: 우연히 ~하다
• astonishment: 깜짝 놀람

 

Both changed colour, one looked white, the other red. Mr. Wickham, after a few moments, touched his hat—a salutation which Mr. Darcy just deigned to return. What could be the meaning of it? It was impossible to imagine; it was impossible not to long to know.
한 명은 하얗게, 다른 한 명은 빨갛게 두 사람 다 얼굴빛이 바뀌었다. 잠시 후 Wickham 씨는 모자를 만지며 인사를 했고 Darcy 씨는 마지못해서 인사를 받아주었다. 저게 무슨 의미일까? 추측하는 것은 불가능했다. 그리고 알고 싶어 하지 않는 것도 불가능했다.

• salutation: 인사
• deign to ~: ~마지못해서 ~하다
• long to ~: 간절히 ~하고 싶다

 

In another minute, Mr. Bingley, but without seeming to have noticed what passed, took leave and rode on with his friend.
그리고 또 잠시 후에 무슨 일이 벌어졌는지 눈치채지 못한 듯한 Bingley 씨는 작별 인사를 하고 친구와 함께 말을 타고 떠났다.

• take leave: 작별을 고하다
• ride on ~: ~에 타고 가다. 여기에서는 말을 타고 가다 입니다.

 

Mr. Denny and Mr. Wickham walked with the young ladies to the door of Mr. Phillip’s house, and then made their bows, in spite of Miss Lydia’s pressing entreaties that they should come in, and even in spite of Mrs. Phillips’s throwing up the parlour window and loudly seconding the invitation.
Denny 씨와 Wickham 씨는 아가씨들과 함께 Phillips 씨의 집 문 앞까지 걸어가서 바래다주고 고개를 숙여 작별 인사를 했다. Lydia가 급하게 들어오라고 청했고 Phillips 부인이 재빨리 거실 창문을 들춰 올리며 큰 소리로 다시 한번 청해도 소용이 없었다.

• in spite of ~: ~에도 불구하고
• pressing: 긴급한(urgent)
• entreaty: 간청, 애원
• throw up: 빠르게 올리다(raise quickly)
• parlour window: 거실 창문
• second: 재청하다
