Chapter 1 (마지막)

 

Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three-and-twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character.
Bennet 씨는 재치 있는 면, 비꼬는 유머, 과묵함, 충동적인 기질이 섞인 아주 이상한 혼합체라 23년의 세월도 그의 아내가 그의 성격을 이해하게 만들기에 충분하지 않았다.

• quick parts: quick-witted (able to reply in a clever or funny way without thinking for a long time)라고 이해하면 될 것 같습니다. 재치 있는 정도로 해석할 수 있을 것 같네요.
• caprice: 기분이나 행동이 갑자기 변하는 것 (a sudden and unaccountable change of mood or behavior), 여기에서는 충동적인 기질이라고 했습니다.
• so odd a mixture of ~: such an odd mixture of ~ 과 같은 것으로 생각됩니다. 

 

_Her_ mind was less difficult to develop. She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper.
그녀(부인)의 마음을 아는 것은 덜 어려웠다. 그녀는 이해력이 나쁘고 지식이 없고 감정 기복이 심한 여자였다.

• develop: 밝히다, 드러내다 (to disclose or unfold ( thoughts, a plot, etc) gradually or (of thoughts, etc) to be gradually disclosed or unfolded)
• mean: 안 좋은 (poor, dirty, and of bad quality)

 

When she was discontented, she fancied herself nervous.
그녀가 기분이 안 좋을 때 그녀는 자신이 신경이 예민하다고 생각했다.

• discontented: 기분이 안 좋은 (feeling unhappy because you want better treatment or an improved situation)
• to fancy oneself ~: 스스로를 ~라고 생각하다 (to consider/imagine oneself ~)

 

The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news.
그녀의 인생에서 가장 우선적인 일은 딸들을 시집보내는 것이었고, 삶의 위안은 이웃집에 다니면서 소문 이야기하는 것이었다.

• 다르게 써보면 Her primary task in life was to get her daughters married. The primary thing that cheered her up and gave her comfort was to have people come to visit and gossip 정도가 될 것 같습니다.
• solace: 위안(comfort or consolation in a time of distress or sadness), its는 her life를 지칭
• get someone married: 누군가를 결혼시키다.
