Chapter 8

 

“Elizabeth Bennet,” said Miss Bingley, when the door was closed on her, “is one of those young ladies who seek to recommend themselves to the other sex by undervaluing their own; and with many men, I dare say, it succeeds. But, in my opinion, it is a paltry device, a very mean art.”
"Elizabeth Bennet은 다른 여성들을 깎아내려서 남성들에게 잘 보이려고 하는 여자들 중 하나예요. 많은 남자들에게 통할지도 모르지만, 시시한 방법이고, 천박한 기술이죠." 문이 닫히자 Bingley 양이 말했다.

• undervalue: 과소평가하다, 깍아내리다
• their own: their는 yong ladies를 가리키며 own은 그들 자신의 (성별)을 의미합니다.
• paltry: 시시한, 보잘것없는
• device: 기술, 방법(a method that is used to produce a particular effect)
• mean: 천한
• art:  ability or skill

 

“Undoubtedly,” replied Darcy, to whom this remark was chiefly addressed, “there is a meanness in _all_ the arts which ladies sometimes condescend to employ for captivation. Whatever bears affinity to cunning is despicable.”
Bingley 양의 말이 주로 향한 대상인 Darcy는 대답했다. "확실히, 여성들이 유혹하기 위해서 때로 체면 불고하고 사용하는 기술들은 모두 천박함이 있소. 교활함에 가까운 것은 그것이 무엇이든 경멸받을만하지."

• to whom this remark was chiefly addressed: 앞에서 한 Bingley 양이 한 말(this remark)이 주로 Darcy에게 한 말이라는 의미라고 합니다. 다시 써보면 to whom Miss Bingley primarily directed her remark 이라고 하네요.
• address something to someone: someone에게 something을 말하다, 쓰다.
• condescend to ~: 자신의 사회적 지위에 맞지 않는 것을 하는 것에 동의하다(If you condescend to do something, you agree to do something that you do not consider to be good enough for your social position)
• for captivation: 유혹(매혹)을 위해서, 유혹하려고
• bear affinity to ~: ~에 가깝다, ~와 유사하다
• cunning: 교활함
• despicable: 경멸받을만한(deserving hatred and contempt)

 

Miss Bingley was not so entirely satisfied with this reply as to continue the subject.
Bingley 양은 그 주제에 대해 계속 이야기할 정도로 그 답변이 만족스럽지 않았다.

• not so ~ as to do something something: 할 정도로 ~하지 않다. 즉, something을 하지 않았다는 의미입니다. "not so adjective that..."와 "not so adjective as to..."는 같은 의미를 가지고 있습니다.
