Chapter 9

 

“Whatever I do is done in a hurry,” replied he; “and therefore if I should resolve to quit Netherfield, I should probably be off in five minutes. At present, however, I consider myself as quite fixed here.”
"저는 뭘 하든 서둘러하는 편입니다. 그래서 제가 Netherfield를 떠나기로 마음먹으면 아마 5분 안에 떠나겠죠. 하지만 지금은 꽤 여기에 정착해 있다고 생각합니다."

• resolve to ~: ~ 하기로 결심하다, 마음먹다 (to make a decision formally or with determination)
• at present: 지금은

 

“That is exactly what I should have supposed of you,” said Elizabeth.
"그게 바로 제가 예상했던 거예요."

• supposed of you: supposed of 라는 표현을 처음 봐서 WordReference.com에 질문해본 결과 That is exactly what I would have expected you to do. (그게 바로 내가 예상했던 것이다) 라고 다시 쓸 수 있다고 하네요. 맥락상 Elizabeth가 예상한 것은 Bingley 씨가 성미가 급하다는 것인 것 같습니다.

 

“You begin to comprehend me, do you?” cried he, turning towards her.
"저를 이해하기 시작하셨군요, 그렇죠?" 그가 그녀를 향하며 소리쳤다.

 

“Oh! yes—I understand you perfectly.”
"오! 그럼요 - 완벽하게 이해하고 있어요."

 

“I wish I might take this for a compliment; but to be so easily seen through I am afraid is pitiful.”
"그 말을 칭찬으로 받아들이고 싶지만, 제 속내가 쉽게 읽히는 건 유감이군요."

• take A for B: A를 B라고 생각하다( to suppose A to be B)
• see through ~: ~를 꿰뚫어 보다. 무슨 생각하는지 안다는 의미이기 때문에 이 문장에서는 속을 읽히다고 해석할 수 있을 것 같습니다.
• 문장 구조에 대해서 덧붙이자면 to be so easily seen through가 is pitiful의 주어라고 봐야 할 것 같네요.

 

“That is as it happens. It does not follow that a deep, intricate character is more or less estimable than such a one as yours.”
"쉬울 수도 있고 어려울 수도 있죠. 속이 깊고 복잡한 성격이 당신 같은 성격보다 더 짐작하기 쉽거나 어려운 것은 아니니까요."

• That is as it happens: WordReference.com에 질문한 결과 이 맥락에서는 Some people are easily seen through. Some aren't. It happens one way or the other. 라는 뜻이라고 합니다. 즉, 어느 쪽으로든 가능성이 있다는 말이기 때문에 위와 같이 해석하였습니다.
• intricate: 복잡해서 이해하거나 분석하기 어려운
• It does not follow that ~: 이 문장은 It does not follow (= it is not an automatic consequence) that a deep, intricate character is [either] more [estimable] or less estimable than such a one as yours (= a character as transparent as yours). 으로 다시 쓸 수 있다고 합니다. more or less가 뒤에 있는 than과 각각 연결되는 구조인데 위에서는 하나로 합쳐서 말했네요.
• it follow that ~: 논리적으로 ~라고 생각할 수 있다, ~라는 결론이 나온다. (the logical result or next step or consequence from what was said or what happened previously.) 이 표현은 수학적 증명이나 논문에서 아주 많이 나오는 표현입니다.

 

“Lizzy,” cried her mother, “remember where you are, and do not run on in the wild manner that you are suffered to do at home.”
"Lizzy, 여기가 어디인지 생각하렴. 집에서만 허락되는 난폭한 태도는 그만하거라."

• run on: 계속하다(to continue for a long time, especially past an expected finishing time)
• suffered: allowed, permitted. 용인되는, 허락되는

 

“I did not know before,” continued Bingley immediately, “that you were a studier of character. It must be an amusing study.”
"당신이 성격 연구자였다니 몰랐습니다. 재밌는 연구겠네요." Bingley가 바로 이어서 말했다.

• studier: 연구자, 학생
• character study: 성격 연구, 성격 묘사 소설.
