MR. SHERLOCK HOLMES.

In the year 1878 I took my degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of London, and proceeded to Netley to go through the course prescribed for surgeons in the army. 
1878년 나는 런던 대학교 의학 박사 학위를 취득하고 군에서 군의관이 되기 위한 필수 과정을 밟기 위해서 Netley로 향했다.

• proceed to ~: ~를 향해 가다(travel in a particular direction)
• go through ~: ~(과정)을/를 밟다
• prescribed for ~: ~에 있어 필수인(obligatory for~)
• surgeon: 외과 전문의

 

Having completed my studies there, I was duly attached to the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers as Assistant Surgeon. 
그곳에서 공부를 끝낸 후 나는 절차에 따라 부군의관로서 노섬벌랜드 제5 보병 연대에 배치되었다.

• duly: 적절한 절차에 따라, 적절한 때에
• be attached to ~: ~에 (단기간) 소속되다, 임시 배치되다
• the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers: 노섬벌랜드 제5 보병 연대
• Assistant Surgeon: 부군의관

 

The regiment was stationed in India at the time, and before I could join it, the second Afghan war had broken out. 
그 당시 연대는 인도에 주둔해 있었고, 내가 입대하기 전에 제2차 아프간 전쟁이 발발하였다.

• regiment: 연대
• be stationed in ~: ~에 주둔하다
• at the time: 그당시, 그때
• break out: 발발하다

 

On landing at Bombay, I learned that my corps had advanced through the passes, and was already deep in the enemy’s country. 
봄베이에 도착했을 때 나는 우리 부대가 이미 산길을 통과해 적국 깊숙히 전진해 있다는 것을 알게 되었다.

• on ~ing: ~하자마자, ~할 때
• land: 착륙하다, 도착하다
• Bombay: 뭄바이(Mumbai)의 옛이름
• corps: 부대
• advance through ~: ~를 통과해 전진하다, 앞으로 나아가다
• pass: 산길(a path or road between or over mountains)
• enemy’s country: 적국

 

I followed, however, with many other officers who were in the same situation as myself, and succeeded in reaching Candahar in safety, where I found my regiment, and at once entered upon my new duties.
하지만 나는 나와 같은 처지에 있는 다른 장교들과 함께 뒤따라가 무사히 칸다히르에 도착하였다. 그 곳에서 나는 소속 연대를 찾았고 즉시 새로운 임무에 착수하였다.

• follow: 뒤따라가다, 뒤따르다
• officer: 장교
• in the same situation as ~: ~와 같은 상황에 있는
• succeed in ~: ~에 성공하다
• reach: 도달하다
• Candahar: 칸다히르(Kandahar). 아프가니스탄 남부 도시
• in safety: 무사히, 안전하게
• enter upon ~: ~에 착수하다, ~를 시작하다
• at once: 즉시, 바로
• duty: 임무, 직무

 

The campaign brought honours and promotion to many, but for me it had nothing but misfortune and disaster. 
그 군사 작전은 많은 이들에게 훈장과 승진을 가져다 주었지만, 나에게는 오직 불행과 재앙만 있었다.

• campaign: 군사 작전
• bring ~ to A: A에게 ~를 가져다 주다, 가져오다
• honour: 훈장
• promotion: 승진
• nothing but: 오직(only)
• misfortune: 불운, 불행
• disaster: 재앙
