I was dispatched, accordingly, in the troopship “Orontes,” and landed a month later on Portsmouth jetty, with my health irretrievably ruined, but with permission from a paternal government to spend the next nine months in attempting to improve it.
그런 이유로 나는 군 수송선 Orontes로 수송되어 한 달 후에 포츠머스 부두에 상륙하였다. 회복할 수 없을 정도로 건강이 망가졌지만 온정적인 정부의 선처로 앞으로 9달을 요양하는데 보낼 수 있었다.

• be dispatched: 보내지다, 파견되다
• accordingly: 상황에 맞게, 그런 이유에 따라
• troopship: 군 수송선
• land on ~: ~에 내리다, 착륙하다, 상륙하다
• Portsmouth: 포츠머스(영국 남부 항구 도시)
• jetty: 부두
• irretrievably: 돌이킬 수 없을 정도로, 회복할 수 없을 정도로
• ruined: 망가진, 피폐해진
• permission to ~: ~할 허가
• paternal: 온화한 아버지같은, 온정적인
• government: 정부
• spend 시간의 양 in ~ing: ~하는데 얼마 만큼의 시간을 보내다 
• attempt to ~: ~를 시도하다

 

I had neither kith nor kin in England, and was therefore as free as air—or as free as an income of eleven shillings and sixpence a day will permit a man to be. 
나는 영국에 일가 친척도 친지도 없었기에 공기처럼 자유로웠다. 아니 하루 11 실링 6펜스의 소득이 한 인간에게 허락하는 만큼 자유로웠다.

• kith: 친구, 지인 등 아는 사람들
• kin: 친척
• income: 소득
• shilling: 실링
• sixpence: 6펜스짜리 은화
• permit: 허락하다

 

Under such circumstances, I naturally gravitated to London, that great cesspool into which all the loungers and idlers of the Empire are irresistibly drained. 
그런 상황에서 영국 제국의 모든 한량과 놈팡이들이 흘러 들어올 수 밖에 없는 거대한 시궁창인 런던으로 나는 자연스럽게 끌려갔다.

• circumstance: 상황
• naturally: 자연스럽게
• gravitate to ~: ~로 끌려가다, 끌리다
• cesspool: 시궁창, 오수 구덩이
• lounger: 한량(a person spending their time lazily or in a relaxed way)
• idler: 게으름뱅이, 놈팡이
• irresistibly: 저항할 수 없는
• drain into ~: ~로 배출시키다, ~로 흘러보내다

 

There I stayed for some time at a private hotel in the Strand, leading a comfortless, meaningless existence, and spending such money as I had, considerably more freely
than I ought. 
그곳에서 나는 스트랜드에 있는 한 고급 호텔에 한동안 머물며 불편하고도 의미없는 삶을 살며 내가 써야 하는 돈보다 훨씬 더 자유롭게 돈을 쓰고 다녔다.

• private hotel: 고급 호텔(손님을 가려 받는 호텔)
• lead a ~ existence: ~한 삶을 살다
• comfortless: 육체적인 편안함을 제공하는 것이 없는, 불편한
• meaningless: 의미 없는
• considerably: 상당히

 

So alarming did the state of my finances become, that I soon realized that I must either leave the metropolis and rusticate somewhere in the country, or that I must make a complete alteration in my style of living. 
내 재정 상태는 아주 염려스러운 상태가 되었고 나는 곧 대도시를 떠나 시골 어딘가에서 살던지 생활 스타일을 완전히 바꾸던지 해야한다는 것을 깨달았다.

• alarming: 걱정스러운, 염려스러운
• the state of my finances: 나의 재정(finances) 상태(state)
• metropolis: 대도시
• rusticate: 시골에서 살다, 시골생활을 하다
• in the country: 시골에서
• make a complete alteration in ~: ~를 완전히 바꾸다,개조하다

 

Choosing the latter alternative, I began by making up my mind to leave the hotel, and to take up my quarters in some less pretentious and less expensive domicile.
후자의 선택지를 선택한 나는 호텔을 떠나 허세가 덜하고 덜 비싼 곳에 숙소를 마련하기로 결심하는 것으로 시작하였다.

• alternative: 대안, 선택지
• make up one’s mind to ~: ~하기로 결심하다
• take up: 공간을 차지하다, 쓰다
• quarters: 사는 곳, 숙소 
• pretentious: 허세 부리는, 가식적인
• expensive: 비싼
• domicile: 거주지
